چکیده

9 Multivariate analyses of carcass traits for Angus cattle, consisting of 6 traits recorded 10 on the carcass and 8 auxiliary traits measured by ultra-sound scanning of live animals, 11 are reported. Analyses were carried out by restricted maximum likelihood, fitting a 12 number of reduced rank and factor-analytic models for the genetic covariance matrix. 13 Estimates of eigen-values and -vectors for different orders of fit are contrasted and 14 implications on the estimates of genetic variances and correlations are examined. 15 Results indicated that at most 8 principal components were required to model the 16 genetic covariance structure among the 14 traits. Selection index calculations sug17 gested that the first 7 of these PCs sufficed to obtain estimates of breeding values for 18 the carcass traits without loss in expected accuracy of evaluation. This implied that 19 the number of effects fitted in genetic evaluation for carcass traits can be halved by 20 estimating breeding values for the leading principal components directly. 21

Bayesian estimation of genetic parameters for growth and carcass traits of grass-fed beef cattle by Full Conjugate Gibbs

Growth and carcass data of Angus cattle were used to estimate heritabilities and genetic and environmental correlations between growth and carcass traits by means of a Bayesian data augmentation (DA) algorithm. Records were taken on 739 Angus steers from 31 sires, during 10 years of a designed progeny test. The cattle were entirely fed on grass during their lifelong. Growth traits evaluated wer...

Association analyses of a SNP in the promoter of IGF1 with fat deposition and carcass merit traits in hybrid, Angus and Charolais beef cattle.

A SNP in the promoter region of insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF1) (c.-512C>T) was analysed for associations with 10 fat deposition and carcass merit traits in hybrid (n = 455), Angus (n = 204) and Charolais (n = 186) beef cattle populations. Significant associations of the SNP were found for ultrasound backfat thickness (P = 0.030), carcass average backfat (P = 0.015) and carcass lean meat yi...

National cattle evaluation system for combined analysis of carcass characteristics and indicator traits recorded using ultrasound in Angus cattle

Objectives were to 1) evaluate genetic relationships of sex-specific indicators of carcass merit obtained using ultrasound with carcass traits of steers, 2) estimate genetic parameters needed to implement combined analyses of carcass and indicator traits to produce unified national cattle evaluations (NCE) for longissimus muscle area, subcutaneous fat depth, and marbling with the ultimate goal ...

Postweaning growth and carcass traits in crossbred cattle from Hereford, Angus, Norwegian Red, Swedish Red and White, Friesian, and Wagyu maternal grandsires1,2

The objective of this study was to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for postweaning growth and carcass composition traits in terminal crossbred cattle. Postweaning growth and carcass traits were analyzed on 434 steers and 373 heifers obtained by mating F1 cows to Charolais sires. Maternal grandsires represented Hereford, Angus, and MARC III (1⁄4 Hereford, 1⁄4 Angus, 1⁄4...
